Family Reunion Trip, Day 55

Hung out in the camper this morning until about 0930. As usual we just watched the temps climb. They set a new record today for the high temp, 117 deg, the old record was 116 in 1943!
We took a drive (as the AC in the truck works fine) through old Kingman and north to Hoover Dam.
Here's a RT 66 sign in Kingman.
This is a view of the Colorado River from a wayside viewing area.
Another pic of the Colorado.
We still can't get over how wild these mountains look.
Headed down toward Lake Mead.
And here's the first view of Lake Mead.
The next few pics are of the Hoover Dam. They have totally remodeled the entire place from what we remember 35 years ago.

We stopped for lunch at this joint about half way between Hoover Dam and Kingman on RT 93.

Back at the camper we watched some TV and sweltered. We can't wait for tomorrow as the temps in Flagstaff and only in the 80s during the day and 50s at night.

Family Reunion Trip, Day 54

I got up this morning at 0600, temp was only 85, 72 in the camper. I know we keep bitching about the temps, but we just happened to be here when then are setting 10 -15 year records!
We left the RV around 0930 and headed back west to drive some of the old RT 66 we could not do with the camper in tow. Went back about 10 miles on I40 to the Old Rt 66 (which is now RT10) and headed to Oatman, AZ.
Here's a view views before we got into the mountains.

First stop was at Cool Springs Station. Google this it is interesting. route66coolspringsaz.com

Cath and I both like this cactus, but have not seen it before. Some of them are 15 - 20 ft high!
Our favorite sign!!😄
Next few pics from this drive. It is a hairpin, switchback, narrow, no guardrail, steep grades, up and down road.....I hated it, but the sites are amazing! Did I mention white-knuckle?

This is the one pic we took in Oatman. It is a tourist town. We did not stop. There were mules (Jackasses) wandering the street. It reminded us of Wall Drug in South Dakota.

Temp 118, but it got to 122 an hour later. This while we were driving!
Headed to Lake Havasu City. Home of the London Bridge.
Here's the bridge.
A few more pics of the bridge.

Headed back to the camper and arrived at 1630. The ACs have been running all day and temp in the camper was only 94! We guess the camper ACs are not made for 120 deg temps. We will be happy to un-ass this area. We were going to have a lazy camper day tomorrow, but it is more comfortable in the truck, so we are going to Hoover Dam.

Family Reunion Trip, Day 53

We got up at 0600 trying to beat the heat, but we didn't succeed. It was 85 at 0600 and 92 by 0700! Here's Kaylee sitting in the shade waiting for us to get on the road.
We hit RT 66 at 0730.
First stop was Ludlow, CA at the historic cafe. It was open and it is the only thing left in Ludlow.
Miner's cars from 1882 at the cafe.
We were in a lava field for about 15 miles and came upon this Landmark.
Here's what's left of the crater that created the lava fields.
Another view (had to get the truck in the pic as I just washed it).
All along RT 66 they have this painted on the road. There is no rhyme or reason as to how often, it's just random distances.
Here's few pics of some of the hills and mountains we saw today.

Here's the desert garden at the entrance to our campground. We are in Golden Valley, just north of Kingman, AZ.
Here's the campsite. It's a very small RV park, maybe 20 sites. Most are full-timers. We are in one of the 5 transit sites with NO SHADE!.
Temps today were 115+. Even with both ACs at full blast we can barely get the camper to the mid 80s. I wish I could run the ACs while we are towing! Forecast temps for the next two days are even hotter. We will be glad to get to Flagstaff, it's a lot cooler there.
CTC today was 69, but only saw 3 on RT 66. The rest were on I40, as we had to detour due to some washouts on RT 66. There was very little traffic on RT 66, I'll bet we didn't see 30 other vehicles for the 130 miles we spent on the route. Everyone is in a hurry, so they use I40. 😬😮😲😡
