Family Reunion Trip, Day 72

Today was a travel Day and one of the best. We did about 300 miles and never left Old RT 66 until we got to our new campground. The road was great and the sights were wonderful! We enjoyed this ride more than any other part so far. East of Oklahoma City, into Kansas, and them into Missouri, the states do RT 66 right! So here we go, we took tons of pics. I'm only putting the really good ones here, but we have probably 70 on our phones, it was a great ride today.
First stop was POPS just east of Oklahoma City. 66 FT tall neon pop bottle!

And here's Craig on a cycle. We see tons of motorcycles on RT 66, but most of them are in Sturgis now. We read over 500,000 are there this year!

And finally in our campground, but that is a story too.

Not sure how I screwed up this reservation, but we booked a site with no power! When we arrived at 1530 the temp was 95. There were no power sites available. We opened all the windows in the camper and ran the fans on battery power, but at 2000 it was still smokin' hot! It started to cool off around 2100, we both took cold showers and went to bed. Temps cooled down to the mid 70s. Tomorrow we move to a power site and we are both looking forward to having some AC!

Family Reunion Trip, Day 71

We left camp this morning and headed to Guthrie, OK to do laundry. Guthrie is the closest town (city) to us.It is only a ten minute drive.
We were really impressed with the downtown. Here's a few pics.

We spent the afternoon playing cribbage as it's 95 deg outside. Got the camper ready to go tomorrow. We will have a calzone and wings for dinner. I forgot to post a pic of this campsite, so here it is. The little bit of shade was nice.

Family Reunion Trip, Day 70

Did a little backtracking to El Reno, OK, just a little west of Oklahoma City. We wanted to follow RT 66 through the city and a few other little towns.

This is the famous flour mill in Yukon, TX. We'd like to see it a night as there is a big neon sign on the top.

Family Reunion Trip, Day 69

Left Palo Duro a little late (0800) as we are still getting used to the time zone change.
First stop on RT 66 was Bug Ranch (a spoof on Cadillac Ranch). Here's a few pics of the old gas station and the bugs (VWs).

Next stop was Groom, TX. This is the largest cross in the western hemisphere.

Next stop, the Oklahoma welcome center. This is the bathroom mosaic in the men's room. Cath said they have the same thing in the ladies room.

Made it to our new campground, a few toddies, a nice dinner, and off to bed. Today was a 300 mile plus day, bed will feel good.

Family Reunion Trip, Day 68

We left camp and headed to Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge Area. There was no wildlife or lake there. We were disappointed. We did the 5 mile drive to view the place, but no water, therefore no wildlife. The campground there was empty. If the lake would have been full it would be a neat place.

We did a little shopping and headed back to camp. Tomorrow is a travel day, so we just relaxed and had a great taco dinner. The tortillas in this area are fantastic.
All in all just a relax day, off to bed at 2100.
